Is it Time for New Tires? (How to Check Your Tread)
Driving on worn-out or "bald" tires significantly increases your braking distance and risk of hydroplaning. Car-X recommends following the Tire Industry Association (TIA) guidelines for tread depth replacement thresholds. Consider purchasing new tires when your tire tread reaches 6/32 of an inch for snow and winter weather, 4/32 of an inch for wet weather, and 2/32 absolute minimum. If it hits 2/32 of an inch, your tires are considered legally worn out and unsafe in most states.
Try these simple tire tests at home:
- The Quarter Test: Place a quarter upside down in the tread grooves. If part of Washington's head is covered, your tires are below 4/32". If you can see the top of his head, it's time to start shopping for new tires.
- The Penny Test: To be legal in most states, tires must have 2/32" or more tread depth. (The Automotive Maintenance and Repair Association (AMRA) is petitioning states to raise the minimum threshold to 4/32".) Place a penny in the tread; if the tread doesn't cover part of Abe Lincoln's head, you are below the 2/32" limit.
- The Wear Bar Test: Manufacturers place "wear bars" in the grooves between treads. When the treads are flush with these bars, the tires must be replaced.
Understanding Tire Ratings (UTQGS)
To help consumers compare tires, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration established the Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards (UTQGS). Tires are graded in three critical categories:
- Treadwear Rate: A higher number means the tire should last longer. If your daily commute racks up big mileage, choose a tire rated between 400 - 800.
- Traction Performance: Rated as AA, A, B, or C. This measures the tire's ability to stop on wet pavement.
- Temperature Resistance: Rated as A, B, or C. If you drive at highway speeds or tow frequently, an A-rated tire is important to prevent blowouts caused by overheating.
Total Tire Services & Maintenance
Extending the life of your new tires requires regular maintenance. Beyond sales, Car-X offers full-service tire care to keep you on the road longer:
- Tire Rotation: We recommend rotating tires every 5,000 miles to ensure even wear.
- Wheel Alignment: If your car pulls to one side, an alignment check can prevent premature tire wear.
- Wheel Balancing: Ensure a vibration-free ride with precision computer balancing.
- Flat Tire Repair: Caught a nail? Our technicians can often repair a puncture if it's in the tread area, saving you the cost of a new tire.
